A Factory in My Garden by Elaine Taylor

A Lifelong Passion for Early Childhood Education Early childhood education storytelling plays a crucial role in developing young minds. That’s why I’ve written a children’s book about bees to engage and inspire kids through storytelling. This combination of early childhood education storytelling with a children’s book about bees is designed to captivate and educate.
For as long as Elaine Taylor can remember, teaching little children was her passion and calling. After leaving high school, she pursued this dream by studying Early Childhood Education in London. Elaine’s focus on early childhood education storytelling is evident in her work. Upon completing her studies, Elaine returned to Jamaica and devoted over forty years to teaching kindergarten.
Teaching Through Curiosity, Nature, and Discovery
Throughout her career, Elaine focused on nurturing a love of learning—not just ABCs and 123s, but curiosity for experimenting and exploring the world around us. Living in Jamaica provided endless opportunities for discovery, with its vibrant gardens, diverse animals, colourful flowers, and beautiful beaches. These natural wonders became the foundation for her lessons, encouraging children to connect with their environment through storytelling. Her emphasis on early childhood education storytelling helped bridge these connections.

Why Storytime Was Always the Heart of Learning
Storytime was always Elaine’s favourite part of the day. She believed stories were powerful tools for learning, sparking imagination, developing language, and inspiring deeper exploration of topics. When she retired, Elaine decided to carry this philosophy beyond the classroom by writing a children’s book that combined education with creativity. Her children’s book about bees is a testament to her lifelong dedication to early childhood education storytelling.

“A Factory in My Garden” – A Children’s Book About Bees
Her book, “A Factory in My Garden”, is designed for children aged 4–8 and introduces the importance of bees in our everyday lives. Inspired by her granddaughters’ curiosity about bees in her garden, Elaine crafted a story that is both engaging and informative. The book includes a glossary of key terms and fun activity pages to reinforce learning for young readers.

Inspiring Environmental Awareness in Young Readers
Elaine’s mission goes beyond storytelling. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which destroyed much of the western side of Jamaica’s flora and made survival difficult for bees and other wildlife, Elaine hopes her book will spark conversations among young readers about environmental care and sustainability. Her focus on early childhood education storytelling, particularly through a children’s book about bees, aims to educate and inspire young minds.
In the aftermath of the hurricane, bee farmers in Jamaica have had to feed bees with sugar-water mixtures to keep them alive—a stark reminder of how interconnected ecosystems are. Elaine believes that teaching children about bees is the first step toward raising awareness about biodiversity and protecting all flora and fauna (Fona) for future generations.
